By many accounts, EA Dice delivered on its multiplayer-only installment in the burgeoning Battlefield franchise two weeks ago, attracting a strong critical reception for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 downloadable game. However, Battlefield 1943's launch was marred by significant instability, especially on Microsoft's console, as EA scrambled to add additional play servers after drastically underestimating gamers' enthusiasm for the online title.
Today, EA put that enthusiasm into perspective, announcing that Battlefield 1943 had sold more than 600,000 copies across the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of the game since its July 8 launch. That sales tally, the publisher notes, secures the title for "fastest selling day one and week one download-only game" worldwide on Xbox Live and in North America for the PSN. Battlefield 1943 is available for $15 (MSP1,200).

The game received "favorable" reviews on both platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[34][35] In addition to having the best sales on the first day it was released, Battlefield 1943 went on to become the fastest selling download-only game after the first week.[36] Battlefield 1943 was the top selling Xbox Live Arcade game of 2009, as reported by Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb. It sold over 268,000 units in 2010.[37] As of May 2010, the game sold 1.5 million copies.[38]

I, for one, am more than a little tired of people constantly complaining when downloadable games on PSN and XBLA are more than $10. Sure, sometimes the games aren't worth it, but I think that too many folks are quick to assume that the value isn't there before they check the game out themselves; this is what demos are for, after all.Recently I checked out Battlefield 1943: Pacific, playing through the various levels, and I can safely say that for me it'll be worth the price tag of $15. Allow me to break it down for those of you who might need convincing. Read More
DICE and EA are prepping to offer gamers the chance to get in on some new Battlefield mayhem. Maybe "let the cat out of the bag" isn't the right term. Is "let the cat halfway out" more appropriate? Arguably. EA just announced pricing for Battlefield 1943, DICE's downloadable multiplayer shooter. When can you expect to become $15 (or 1200 MS Points) poorer? June, if you're planning to play on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. It won't be a simultaneous launch across console and PC, though. EA announced a September date for the Windows version. If you missed last month's GDC preview, BF1943 revamps three classic Battlefield 1942 maps with DICE's Frostbite engine, which allows more environmental destructibility. It's fairly streamlined, too, offering three classes to match the three maps. Read More
Battlefield 1943 is, like the upcoming Battlefield 5, a vehicle and infantry-based war simulator set in World War 2. The matches aren't quite as big as what the series is working with now: maximum size is 24 players, down considerably since Battlefield: 1942. It was a download-only, lower-priced game designed as an alternative to the larger-scale 1942, which was still a fairly risky move for a major publisher to take at the time. That smaller scale makes it a good way to get a bit of a Battlefield fix in advance of the new title, out in October.
